Story Behind It
The history of Theologos is inextricably linked to the need for residents to protect themselves from pirate raids, a necessity that led to the choice of its mountainous, inaccessible location and established it as the capital of Thassos during the period of Ottoman rule from the 18th century until 1902.
This rich past is beautifully preserved in its local architecture; in 1974, the Ministry of Culture officially designated the settlement as protected, safeguarding its unique houses built with traditional stone and slate roofs. Furthermore, the village's geographic isolation led the mountain residents to occupy themselves primarily with animal husbandry, a traditional livestock-farming lifestyle that ultimately gave birth to the village's modern-day gastronomic reputation for its famous roast goat or lamb on a spit.
