Story Behind It
The history of Skala Kallirachis is typical of the coastal settlements in Thassos that originally developed as ports, or "epineio", for the mountain villages. Historically, residents from the traditional mountain village of Kallirachi would descend to this coast to serve their everyday agricultural and fishing needs, though the rise of tourism eventually transformed the Skala into the area's primary center of residence and activity.
This deeply rooted maritime heritage remains visibly anchored in the large, protected harbour crowded with traditional fishing boats, a legacy that sustains a relaxed pace of life and ensures a steady supply of exceptionally fresh catches for the local tavernas.
Furthermore, the area boasts a rare architectural feature for the North Aegean: historic houses built right at the water's edge with distinct stone arches. These arches formerly served as functional seaside shelters for storing small boats, creating a striking landscape that visually mirrors the traditional boat-house architecture found on Cycladic islands like Milos.
