Story Behind It
The name of the beach, Sarakina (“place of the Saracens”), is no coincidence. It dates back to an era when the Aegean lived in fear of pirates — mainly the Saracens, Arab pirates who raided the coastal villages. According to local tradition, Sarakina, with its hidden cove and sandy shore, served as a secret anchorage and refuge for pirate ships.
The waters were shallow enough to prevent large naval vessels from approaching, yet the spot was isolated enough for pirates to hide, repair their ships, and bury their treasures before setting off on their next raid. Today, Sarakina’s tranquility stands in stark contrast to its wild history.
Still, the sense of mystery and hidden treasure lingers in the air, making a walk along its unorganized section even more fascinating.
