Story Behind It
The port’s history is inextricably intertwined with the very evolution of Kavala, having served as one of the most strategic maritime hubs in Northern Greece for millennia. Since antiquity, when it was the port of the ancient city of Neapolis, it served as a vital trading post for the Mediterranean.
In the 19th century, during the "golden age" of tobacco, it transformed into one of the busiest harbors in the Balkans, exporting the famous "Basma" tobacco to the world. Today, while heavy commercial activities have moved to the "Philippos II" port outside the city, the central harbor remains the soul of the city, hosting journeys to the North Aegean islands and welcoming the daily wealth brought in by local fishermen.
