Heading uphill from Prinos, the route leads you to a world where time seems to have stood still. Kazaviti, nestled on the mountain slopes, welcomes you with its stone mansions, schist roofs, and wooden balconies hanging over narrow cobblestone alleys. It is a place where nature and architecture become one, offering a breath of cool air even on the hottest days of summer.
The village is divided into Mikros and Megalos Prinos, with the central square of Megalo Kazaviti being the heart of the area. There, under the shade of centuries-old plane trees, the tranquility is interrupted only by the sound of running water and the clinking of glasses filled with local ouzo and tsipouro.
Story Behind It
The name of the village is believed to have Latin roots, referring to the "house of Kazazis. " For centuries, residents chose the mountain to protect themselves from pirate raids. Despite the abandonment it experienced for several decades, especially after 1950 and 1960, the village was reborn thanks to the passion of people who restored the ruins, preserving its authentic Macedonian architecture and historical heritage.
Why We Love It
We love Kazaviti because it offers an experience that stimulates all the senses. It is the scent of pine and oregano coming from the mountain, the taste of local honey and spit-roasted lamb found in traditional taverns, and the feeling of absolute peace. It is the ideal place for those seeking the "other" Thassos, the mountainous and proud side, far from the busy coastline.
Fresh Tips
- Visit the village late in the afternoon, when the sunlight passes through the plane trees, creating a magical atmosphere for photos.
- Walk the paths connecting the two settlements to discover hidden chapels and old fountains flowing with crystal-clear water.
- If you find yourself there in the summer, look for the cultural events and music nights organized at the village's small stone theater.
