Story Behind It
The history of this place is the story of a beginning that changed the course of Europe. In 49 AD, Apostle Paul, following a vision calling him to Macedonia, arrived in Philippi. Searching for a place of prayer on the Sabbath, he went outside the city walls to the banks of the Zygaktis, where he met a group of women. Among them was Lydia, a wealthy purple cloth merchant from Thyatira. Lydia didn't just listen to the sermon; she opened her heart and became the first woman to be baptized a Christian on European soil, marking the birth of the first Christian community on our continent.
The baptistery we see today, this architectural masterpiece, was built in the 1970s by the then Metropolitan of Philippi. Its design is full of symbolism: the octagonal shape refers to the "eighth day" of spiritual rebirth, while inside, the mosaics and hagiographies uniquely narrate Paul's journey. The floor is decorated with a map of the Apostle's travels through cities and seas. Yet, the most moving part remains the "open-air baptistery" by the river, where adult baptisms are still performed to this day, keeping alive a two-thousand-year-old tradition within the same natural setting that hosted that very first baptism.
