The Palaia Kavala Trail: A Walk Through a “Jungle”

Experiences7 months ago

Just a stone’s throw from the city of Kavala, the Palaia Kavala Trail is a hidden paradise that will transport you to a small “jungle.” This is a route of unique natural beauty, filled with centuries-old plane trees, running water, and an atmosphere that invites you to explore the wild beauty of nature.

The Story Behind It

The trail gets its name from the traditional village of Palaia Kavala, which was founded in 1391 on the site of the ancient city of Skavala. Along the village’s stream, the route reveals pieces of another era. You will encounter a beautifully restored watermill, which was once part of a network of 13 watermills in the area. A little further on, you’ll see an old water trough, or “doulaapi” as the locals called it, where they used to wash their carpets and heavy capes.

Why We Love It

We love the Palaia Kavala trail because it’s an experience that stimulates all the senses. The feeling of walking under the natural shade of the plane trees, amidst ivy and wild vines that hang in the air, is like stepping into another world. The crystal-clear waters, the steep rocks, and the small caves create a captivating landscape.

The route also hides another surprise: the abandoned marble quarry. At the beginning or end of the trail (depending on whether you are walking uphill or downhill), you’ll witness this impressive scene, where in the spring, with the abundant water, a small lake forms within the carved marble.

The highlight, however, is the unique waterfall betrayed by the sound of its rushing water. Its powerful flow has carved the rock, creating two impressive pools with cold, crystal-clear water, which you can safely jump into during the summer months.

Fresh Tips

  • Access: The trail has two entrances. The eastern entrance is the most easily accessible and is located at the entrance of the settlement, to the right of the Zafiris tavern. The western entrance is located near the old quarry.
  • Difficulty: The hiking trail extends just over 2.5 kilometers and is easy, ideal for families. Expect to take about 1.5 hours to complete it.
  • Exploration: You can visit the restored watermill, provided you have made arrangements with the Palaia Kavala Association.
