Story Behind It
The history of this complex of beaches is directly linked to the industry that marked the modern history of Thassos.
- The Geological Origin: The beaches owe their unique beauty to the nearby presence of active marble quarries. The crushed white marble that is transferred to the shore from the operations (or has been naturally deposited) replaces the classic sand. This white material, due to its high reflectivity, creates the turquoise phenomenon in the shallow waters, intensifying the exotic colour of the sea.
- The Name Saliara: The most famous of the three, Saliara, took its name from the saliaropetres (smooth writing stones) that students used long ago as slates to write on—a reference to the white, smooth texture of the shore.
- Three Different Coves: The complex consists of three consecutive coves that offer varying degrees of organization and atmosphere.

We love the Marble Beaches because they are the definition of an exotic destination. The contrast of the white marble with the turquoise sea is a unique sight that you won’t find anywhere else in Greece. Fresh Tips
- Access: Access is via a passable dirt road that passes through the quarries. You must be careful while driving.
- Access by Boat: Access by boat is a MUST! These beaches are very popular for recreational boats, and the view from the sea is unique.
- Due to their popularity, the beaches fill up quickly, especially during the summer months. It’s best to visit them early in the morning.
- At Vathi Beach, it is good to know that the hotel has organized a large part of it for its guests. If you don’t plan to use their services, you can sit on the edges of the beach.
