The Archontiko Galaxidi: The Nautical State of the Corinthian Gulf

Experiences3 weeks ago

The moment you arrive in Galaxidi, you instantly feel you have escaped the passage of time and the noise of the mainland. This small, stately town in the Prefecture of Fokida, built amphitheatrically, gazes upon the Corinthian Gulf through the eyes of its 19th-century sea captain houses (kapetanosspita). With its two natural harbours, the Central Port and the more picturesque Chirolakas, Galaxidi maintains an atmosphere of romance and nostalgia, inviting you to stroll its narrow, cobbled alleys that always lead back to the sea.

Story Behind it

Galaxidi’s history begins in antiquity, as it is built upon the walls of ancient Oianthi or Haleion (8th century BC). However, its great peak came in the 19th century, when it developed into a dominant maritime power in Greece, boasting a massive fleet of sailing ships. The town became wealthy from shipping and trade. This prosperity was reflected in the impressive mansions and the simple yet imposing architecture that remains unchanged to this day, culminating in the Holy Church of Saint Nicholas and the Church of Agia Paraskevi. Its historical weight is so significant that the “Chronicle of Galaxidi” (1703) is considered one of the most important manuscripts concerning the history of the region during the Ottoman rule.

Why we love it

We love Galaxidi because it gives you the sensation of having travelled back in time, to a Greece that is slower, more stately, and sweeter. It is a destination of tranquillity and romance that offers the perfect combination of land and sea. A walk in the Pera Panta Grove, with its view of the harbour and its island aura, is unique, while a visit to the Nautical and Historical Museum—the first in Greece—is an essential dive into the glorious era of sailing ships. Finally, the traditional “flour-smudging custom” (alevromoutzouroma) on Clean Monday makes it a unique Carnival destination.

Fresh Tips

  • It is worth visiting the Church of Agia Paraskevi to see the solar calendar—a zodiac circle carved into the floor by the captain-astronomer Ilias Skourtis.
  • Do not miss a walk in the picturesque Chirolakas, the small harbour where the wives and widows of the sea captains used to gather.
  • Galaxidi makes an excellent base for visiting Delphi, located just 30 kilometers away.
