Livera, Xanthi: A Ghost Village in the Thracian Tempi

Experiences7 months ago

Livera Xanthi, is one of the most atmospheric abandoned Pomak villages in the region. Built amphitheatrically on a slope, above the Nestos River, it is a ghost town that stands as a silent witness to the past.

The Story Behind It

The village, like many others in the area, was gradually abandoned starting in the 1950s as residents migrated to urban centers. Today, most of its stone houses are in ruins, but the traditional architecture of the region is still evident.

Why We Love It

This is a place that makes you feel as if time has stood still. The absolute silence, the proud ruins, and the wild beauty of the landscape create a unique atmosphere. The area is also known for the wild horses that roam freely between the villages of Livera and Kromniko, adding a sense of mystery and untamed nature to the scenery.

Fresh Tips

  • Explore the Nestos Straits: From Livera, you have access to the International E6 Hiking Trail, an impressive route that follows the eastern bank of the Nestos River. The trail passes through the narrow gorge, known as the Thracian Tempi, with a view of the river’s famous meanders.
  • The Livera Train Station: The Livera Stop is one of the most unique points on the route. The old, renovated train station is located right by the river and serves as a rest stop for hikers. Access is mainly by foot, as regular train services no longer stop there for the public.
  • Wild Horse Watching: If you’re lucky, you might encounter the wild horses that live freely in the area. Observe them from a distance so as not to disturb them.
  • Photography: The ruined landscape and wild nature are ideal for those who love photography, especially during the hours with the best light.
