Kakou Beach, Ierapetra | The Calm Luxury of the Libyan Sea

Experiences1 month ago

Kakou Beach embodies the charm of Southern Lasithi, offering a setting where the tranquility of the Libyan Sea meets modern amenities. The shore, covered mainly by fine pebble, is embraced by deep blue, clear waters that are usually calm and warm, making it ideal for swimming. Although it is in direct proximity to a large luxury hotel complex, the beach maintains free public access, creating a blend of cosmopolitan atmosphere and natural beauty.

Here, you can enjoy your swim with views of the surrounding hills, leaving behind the hustle and bustle of Ierapetra town, from which it is only a few minutes away. The sea deepens relatively quickly, yet offers plenty of space for swimming and diving, while the surrounding area is designed to provide all necessary services—from shaded spots to options for dining and drinks right by the water. It is the ideal spot for those who want to combine the serenity of the south with full organization.

Story Behind It

Kakou Beach, which is located in the Koutsounari area, 10 kilometers east of Ierapetra, belongs to the region of the picturesque village of Agios Ioannis.

Its original name was “Kaki Skala” (Bad Ladder/Staircase), possibly due to the once difficult access, however, the name “Kakkos” has now prevailed in common language, due to the large hotel complex Kakkos Bay (now Kakkos Beach Hotel) which is located approximately 200 meters to the west and contributed to its development and organization. Although the area has experienced significant tourist development, the beach remains freely accessible to everyone. At its eastern end there is a small harbor that mainly serves local fishermen. The sea here is known for the absence of waves on most summer days.

Why We Love It

It is beloved because it offers a high level of comfort and services in a quiet and clean environment in South Crete.

  • The calm sea, with crystal clear waters and fine pebble, making it ideal for safe swimming and diving.
  • The full organization which includes parking facilities, restaurants, bars, and the possibility of using the hotel’s amenities (often for a charge).
  • The easy access from the town of Ierapetra via an asphalt road, making it a quick option for a quality swim.

Fresh Tips

  • Although the beach is organized, some visitors mention that the fine pebble gets very hot, so flip-flops are recommended for moving on the shore.
  • It is worth exploring the neighboring Kaki Skala beach to the east, which is larger and completely unorganized for quieter swims.
  • The area is close to the village of Agios Ioannis, which offers traditional tavernas for authentic Cretan food.
