Haidou Forest: The King of the Eternal Shade

Experiences5 months ago

In the remote mountains of the Central Rhodope range, where nature defines the border between Macedonia and Thrace, lies the Haidou Forest (also known as Drymos). This mountainous mass, with peaks like Gyftokastro (1,828m), hosts one of Europe’s most important and pristine forest ecosystems. The heart of the forest beats among the super-centennial beeches (Fagus sylvatica), trees that reach over 30 meters in height with trunks exceeding one meter in diameter. Along with the beeches, pines, firs, and spruces thrive, creating an imposing, almost dark landscape that has been declared a “Monument of Nature”. Haidou Forest offers a profound, authentic mountainous experience, far from crowded destinations.

Story Behind It

Haidou Forest is part of the Kula mountain range and bears the name Drymos (Dense Forest) due to its density. Its importance lies not only in its size but in its antiquity and undisturbed state. Since 1980, a section of 18 hectares of the forest (in the Tsichla area) has been officially designated a “Protected Monument of Nature” due to its exceptional ecological and phytogeographical value, highlighting its role as a “reference ecosystem” for the entire continent. The existence of the Forest Village in the Erymanthos area demonstrates the systematic effort for mild tourism development and protection, allowing visitors to stay literally in the heart of the forest.

Why We Love It

Why do we love it? Haidou offers a unique journey back in time, to the most pristine form of European nature. The feeling evoked by the towering, ancient beeches is majestic and almost metaphysical, as the forest is so dense that sunlight struggles to penetrate, creating an atmosphere of eternal, cool shade. The area serves as a sanctuary for large mammals such as the bear, the wolf, and the roe deer, while the endemic Rhodope yellow lily (Lilium Rhodopeum) flourishes here. The tranquility of the countless streams and the views from the Erymanthos Forest Village complete the experience, making Haidou an ideal destination for hikers seeking absolute connection with the mountain.

Fresh Tips

  • Base Camp: The Erymanthos Forest Village is the best starting point for exploring the forest, offering accommodation and basic services.
  • Must See: Do not miss the hike to the Livadis Waterfall (or Trachoniou), one of the most impressive in the Balkans, with waters plunging from a height of 40–60 meters.
  • The Trail: Seek out the Beech Trail (leading to the Monument of Nature) to admire the ancient beeches.
  • Caution: Access roads are primarily forest roads. Especially in winter or after heavy rain, a 4×4 vehicle and great care are required.
  • Tip: Combine your walk with a visit to the Leonidas Bridge in Arkoudorema, one of the highest traditional stone bridges in Greece.
