Glarokavos Beach, Halkidiki: The “Blue Lagoon” of Kassandra

Experiences3 weeks ago

You arrive, and the first sight hits you like a pleasant wave: golden, soft sand meeting crystalline waters in all shades of turquoise. Glarokavos, however, hides a secret at its end. You walk past the beach bars and sun loungers until, suddenly, the landscape transforms: the open sea gives way to a quiet, almost mystical lagoon. Here, the saltiness mixes with the scent of pine trees that reach the shore, and the water colours deepen even more, as if you are swimming in a Blue Lagoon guarding anchored fishing boats. It is the spot in Halkidiki where you feel you have found double paradise: cosmopolitan life and absolute natural tranquillity, all in one embrace.

Story Behind It

The name Glarokavos is derived from gulls (glaroi) and anchorage (kavos), as the cove at the end of the beach has always served as a natural refuge for boats and a gathering place for gulls.

While its main attraction today is its natural beauty, the area also has a historical and ecological background:

  • Wetland & Marina: Glarokavos was originally a natural swamp. In the early 1970s, the Hellenic Tourism Organisation (EOT) intervened and created an opening to the sea, shaping the cove into a fishing shelter and marina for small boats. This intervention created its current form with the distinctive double sand spit.
  • Archaeological Finds: On the northwestern bank of the lagoon, ruins of a late Roman – early Christian settlement have been identified. The area also functioned as a saltworks during the Roman period and later became a dependency (Metochion) of Iviron Monastery from Mount Athos, where a windmill also existed.

Why We Love It

We love Glarokavos for its incomparable beauty and the rare combination of features it offers:

  • Double Paradise: The length of the beach can comfortably accommodate fans of organised beach bars and water sports, as well as those who prefer freestyle swimming on the quieter side of the lagoon.
  • The Waters: The waters are shallow, crystalline, and perfectly clear, making it an ideal destination for families and safe swimming.
  • Accolades: It is no coincidence that Glarokavos has received pan-European recognition on lists by reputable organisations (such as European Best Destinations), highlighting Greece’s natural heritage.

Fresh Tips

  • The beach is located just outside Pefkochori in Kassandra, about 3 kilometres from the village, with easy access via a paved road.
  • If you enjoy exploring, visit the lagoon at the end of the beach. There you will see the anchored boats and perhaps find the perfect spot for a photograph or fishing.
  • For a panoramic view of the area, look for a spot on the main road as you approach or leave Glarokavos.
