What can you do in a full 48 or 72 hours? We share our experience with you, through a plan full of adventure, history, and relaxation.

Note: The suggested days are merely an idea. You can, of course, change the flow and adapt the activities to your own wishes!

Day One: In the Historical Heart of the City

Our journey in Kavala begins at the port, which is full of life all year. A morning stroll next to the small boats, with the Aegean Sea, the lush green Thassos, and the wild peak of Mount Athos in the background, fills the senses. The coastal road is a living canvas: in the morning, the light reflects on the waters, while in the evening, the lights of the old town and the houses create a spectacle reminiscent of Christmas decorations.

Walking, you will meet locals enjoying their walk and countless cafes and restaurants offering hot drinks and local flavors. The entire route, from one side of the port to the other, is a pleasant walk of about half an hour that is worth doing at a relaxed pace and a tendency to explore.

From the port, the ascent to the old town, Panagia, is a journey back in time. The narrow, cobbled streets invite you to get lost in them, while the traditional houses with wooden balconies and colorful facades testify to the rich history of the place. Here you will find the famous Imaret, the House of Mehmet Ali, and old mosques that have been converted into cultural spaces, such as the Old Music Hall (Palia Mousiki).

The Castle of Kavala dominates the hilltop. As soon as you reach the gate, the view you behold is simply magnificent. The panoramic image of the city, the Kamares (Aqueduct), and Thassos will fully reward you. The ascent to the castle is easy, although uphill, and will take you no more than 20 minutes!

Day Two: Nature, History, and Legends

Kavala offers amazing options for an excursion, both within the city and in the wider area. You can choose between nature and history, depending on your mood.

Urban Hiking and Panoramic View

For nature lovers, a panoramic view of the city is located at the church of Prophet Elias (Profitis Ilias), just a few minutes by car from the main square. From there, you can admire the port, the Castle, and the new neighborhoods, while just above Prophet Elias, on the ring road, starts a wide, cobbled path. Walk towards Saint Panteleimon (Agios Panteleimonas), which is nestled among the pine trees, and continue even higher to the Cross (Stavros), which is lit up at night and guards the city like a protector. The higher you climb, the more the horizon will stretch, the city will spread at your feet, and Thassos will seem closer!

Journey to Antiquity

If you are a history lover, a short drive (10 minutes from the center) will bring you to the Ancient Egnatia Odos and the archaeological site of Philippi (20 minutes from Kavala), one of the most important in the country. A place of history, with the footsteps of the Apostle Paul, Philip, Alexander the Great, and Saint Lydia having left their indelible mark here.

Further on, the imposing Mount Pangaio rises, known for its monasteries and traditional villages, such as Eleftheroupoli, Nikisiani, Moustheni, and Mesoropi. The paved road reaches high up the mountain, but requires attention as it has several defects! Pangaio, however, is not just a mountain; it is a legend waiting for you to discover it.

Day Three: Discovering the Modern Center

If you have a third day at your disposal, you can dedicate time to exploring the impressive points of the center.

  • Market and History: Walk through the pedestrianized market of the city, discover the narrow streets around Saint Nicholas (Agios Nikolaos), walk the alleys and discover the wonderful Tobacco Warehouses that transport you to the past.
  • The Kamares: Take photos in front of the impressive Kamares (Aqueduct), the Medieval Aqueduct that rises towards the sky. Pass underneath and proceed to the picturesque Karnagio (small boatyard) which is located a few tens of meters further.
  • The Steps of Apostle Paul: If you are not a fan of walking, return to Agios Nikolaos and see the monument created for the first steps of the Apostle Paul in Europe.
  • Coastal Serenity: If, on the other hand, you are a walking enthusiast, continue along the coast for about half an hour to the small port of Sfageia and enjoy the peace and the view.

Story Behind It: Kavala, the Ideal City for All Year Round

Kavala is a city that is different and impressive. It is a destination that offers the tranquility of nature, the charm of history, and the atmosphere of a lively city. From the serene port and the historical alleys of the old town to the beauty of the peri-urban forest and the grandeur of Pangaio, Kavala proves to be a destination for all year round. Get ready to discover its hidden beauties and live unforgettable moments, with the blue of the Aegean Sea as a backdrop.

Fresh Tips

  • Coffee and Dessert: For a hot coffee or a traditional dessert, prefer the cafes located high up, in the area of Panagia (Old Town). The view they offer of the port and the Kamares is unique, especially at sunset. But don’t neglect the wonderful patisseries and “hidden” cafes in the city center either.
  • Local Cuisine: Do not miss trying the local seafood flavors in the taverns of Saint Nicholas port or the Sfageia area. Also look for local products such as the famous kourabiedes (traditional Greek butter cookies).
  • The Tobacco Warehouses: Many of the old tobacco warehouses have been renovated and now function as cultural spaces or event venues. It is worth checking if there is an exhibition or event during your visit, especially in the city center.
  • Tobacco Museum: For those who love history, the Tobacco Museum is a space that highlights the identity of the city and its close relationship with tobacco processing.
  • Beaches: Kavala has 3 beaches within the city! Perigiali, Rapsani, and Kalamitsa! If it is summer, they await you for a swim, while if it is winter, a walk there will give you wonderful oxygen and sea breeze!
