Arnaia: The Archontissa of Holomontas

Experiences2 weeks ago

Arnaia is a beautiful mountain town, built amphitheatrically at 600 meters, on the lush foothills of Mount Holomontas. Away from the cosmopolitan beaches of Chalkidiki, Arnaia retains a distinct, calm charm, thanks to its rich history, its traditional Macedonian architecture, and the idyllic natural landscape that surrounds it. It is no coincidence that CNN ranked it among the most beautiful villages in Greece.

Walking through Arnaia, you will get lost among narrow, cobbled alleys and well-preserved two-story mansions, characteristic examples of 19th-century Macedonian architecture, with their protruding enclosed balconies (sachnisia) and tiled roofs. The heart of life is the large central square (“Pazari”), dominated by an imposing, centuries-old plane tree, a source of drinking water, a meeting point, and a commercial center for centuries. Arnaia is a place that exudes the air of another era, where tradition and nature blend harmoniously.

Story Behind It

The history of Arnaia dates back to antiquity, as the ancient city of Arni (or Avgaia) is mentioned in the area by Thucydides.

  • Liarigova: The name the settlement maintained until 1928 was Liarigova. The village flourished, mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries, as a member of the Mantemochoria (mining villages) and as an important commercial center, thanks to the region’s mines, beekeeping, and, most notably, the weaving art.
  • The Weaving Heritage: Arnaia became famous throughout Macedonia and Roumelia for its high artistic value handmade carpets and textiles, many of which were the renowned “calligraphic” weavings (used for wall decoration).
  • Destruction and Recovery: Like many villages in Chalkidiki, it was destroyed during the 1821 Revolution, but was rebuilt, acquiring the form we see today. Its current name was given in honor of the ancient city.

Why We Love It

We love Arnaia for its unchanged architectural character and the feeling of a “living museum” it offers. It is the ideal destination to escape the coastal crowds and discover the other, mountainous Chalkidiki. Its rich cultural heritage, combined with the Holomontas forest, makes it an excellent choice for all seasons.

Fresh Tips

  • Must-See: Visit the Church of Agios Stefanos (Saint Stephen), where a glass floor reveals the ancient and older Byzantine remains of the pre-existing church beneath.
  • Museums: Do not miss the Historical and Folklore Museum (housed in an 18th-century mansion) and the Weaving Museum, to admire the unique “Arniotika” textiles.
  • Nature: Enjoy hiking in the Grove of Agia Paraskevi or climb up to the chapel of Prophet Elias for a panoramic view.
  • Local Taste: Arnaia has a tradition in beekeeping, and its honey is famous. In its taverns, you will find traditional Macedonian recipes and fine local products.
