Areopoli – The Dauntless Capital of the Unconquered Land

Experiences2 weeks ago

Areopoli, built on a rocky plateau at the foot of the almost barren Mount Sagias, is not just a settlement. It is the historical heart of Mani, a protected traditional village that bustles with life and preserves the austere, stone-built character of the region. Overlooking the Limeni bay, Areopoli is the epitome of the indomitable Maniot spirit.

Walking through Areopoli’s cobbled narrow streets, amongst the imposing towers and traditional churches, you immediately feel the aura of history. The gray of the stone, illuminated by the intense Maniot sun, creates a scene of unique beauty. The main square, with its lively cafés and the Metropolitan Church of the Taxiarchs (Archangels), is the point where the fierce beauty of the past meets the contemporary pulse, offering views that stretch to the Messenian Gulf.

Story Behind It

Areopoli, which was formerly called Tsimova (likely of Slavic origin), acquired its current name (“City of Ares” or “City of the Winds”) by a royal decree of Otto in 1836, honoring the martial valor of its inhabitants.

  • The Birth of the Revolution: Areopoli is known as the Ground Zero of the Greek War of Independence in 1821. On March 17, 1821, the Maniot warlords, under the leadership of Petrobey Mavromichalis, gathered at the Taxiarchs Square, raised the local Maniot flag (white with a blue cross and the phrase “VICTORY OR DEATH”), and declared war on the Ottomans, before the official start of the Revolution.
  • The Mavromichalis Family: The town is the birthplace and stronghold of the powerful Mavromichalis family, rulers of Mani, who spearheaded the struggle for independence.

Why We Love It

We love Areopoli because it is the most vibrant and authentic settlement in Inner Mani, serving as an ideal base for exploring the area. We are fascinated by its historical significance, especially the spot in the Square of the Immortals (or March 17th Square), where the struggle began. Its center retains its stately splendor with its tall towers (e.g., Pikoulakis Tower) and traditional architecture, while simultaneously offering all the amenities of a modern destination.

Fresh Tips

  • Must-See: Visit the Square of the Immortals to see the statue of Petrobey Mavromichalis and the Metropolitan Church of the Taxiarchs, where the Revolution was declared.
  • A Taste of Mani: Try local specialties such as synglino (traditional smoked pork), handmade pies, and the famous lalaggia (fried strips of dough).
  • Excursion Base: Areopoli is just 2 km from the picturesque Limeni (its port) and within easy reach of the Diros Caves, as well as the beaches near Tainaron, making it an ideal base.
