Angitis River Cave (Maara): A Dive into the Endless Darkness

Experiences5 months ago

This is a journey into the depths of the Earth. The Angitis River Cave, also known as Maara, is a place where time is measured in drips. Stepping inside, the sound of everyday life fades and gives way to the underground whisper of the river that flows ceaselessly. You walk on a specially designed footbridge, with spotlights illuminating a magical spectacle: massive, imposing stalactites in shades of white and red, hanging like sculptures from the ceiling. The atmosphere is cool, mysterious, and otherworldly. It’s a rare feeling to be inside a living monument of nature.

The Story Behind It

The exploration of the cave began in 1978 by Greek and French speleologists, and to date, over 10 kilometers of tunnels have been mapped. Numerous archaeological finds have been discovered in the area, such as stone tools and animal bones (mammoths, rhinoceroses), dating back up to 30,000 years, which are now housed in the Archaeological Museum of Drama.

Why We Love It

Beyond its unique natural beauty, what makes this cave so interesting is that it’s the only accessible river cave in Europe. The tour through the specially lit space is a truly unique experience. The cave is also home to 37 animal species, including transparent fish.
