Ancient Messene: The City Born from Freedom

Experiences2 weeks ago

A visit to Messene is an immersion into antiquity. What leaves you speechless is the scale of the site: this is a complete city, not merely a sanctuary. From the very first moment, you pause to admire the Arcadian Gate, a monumental circular fortress through which the ancient road passed. As you proceed through the archaeological site (which covers 350-400 acres), you tour a Theatre, a Stadium of enormous dimensions, a Gymnasium, and the impressive Asclepieion with its restored columns. The feeling is like walking in a city that “froze” in the 3rd century B.C., a Greek “Pompeii,” which still retains its original urban plan.

The Story Behind It

Ancient Messene was not founded by chance. Its founding is directly linked to Sparta’s greatest defeat. It was founded in the winter of 370-369 B.C. by the Theban general Epaminondas, immediately after his victory at the Battle of Leuctra, with the aim of liberating Messenia from the long-standing Spartan occupation. The city was built with splendour and speed and named in honour of the mythical queen Messene, daughter of King Triopas. Its location, at the foot of Mount Ithome, provided a natural fortification. Its famous walls, measuring 9.5 kilometres long and almost 3 meters thick, made it impregnable and provoked the admiration of the traveler Pausanias in the 2nd century A.D. The city flourished primarily during the Hellenistic and early Roman periods.

Why We Love It

We love it because it is a prime example of restoration and the integrity of an ancient settlement.

In contrast to many archaeological sites that include scattered finds, Messene offers a complete picture of public and private life. You can walk in the Stadium and imagine the games, tour the Asclepieion (the political and religious centre), and feel the atmosphere of the Agora (Marketplace). The Arcadian Gate with its 2 massive towers is an architectural masterpiece. Furthermore, the site is exceptionally well-cared for, with the modern restoration being subtle and highly documented, highlighting the ancient construction. It is truly an archaeological park that respects its landscape and history.

Fresh Tips:

  • Duration: Allocate at least 3 hours for a good tour of the main archaeological site and the most important monuments (Theatre, Asclepieion, Stadium).
  • Gate & Walls: Do not miss visiting the Arcadian Gate first, which is located a little further north, and walking along a section of the 9 kilometre walls.
  • Operating Hours: Visit the area early in the morning, immediately after opening at 8:00 a.m., or late in the afternoon, especially during the hot months, as the area has little shade.
  • Museum: Just before the entrance to the main site, visit the Archaeological Museum which houses important sculptural finds (such as those by Damophon), which will help you better understand the buildings.
  • Access: Ancient Messene is located about 30 kilometres from Kalamata, near the village of Mavrommati Ithomis. The route is easy, and there is ample parking.
