The Story Behind It
The history of the Springs is closely connected to the creation of the city itself. According to tradition, the area was once a plot of land on which the church of Agia Varvara was to be built. However, the waters that gushed in 1383, on the eve of the Saint’s feast day, flooded the area, thus saving the city from occupation. Since then, the area has been a symbol of protection and life for the residents of Drama. Today, the waters have been transformed into a magical park, accessible all year round.
Why We Love It
We fell in love with Agia Varvara Springs because they are an unexpected oasis of coolness and serenity, right in the heart of a vibrant city. It is the perfect place to get close to nature without having to travel far. The feeling of being in a natural refuge while also enjoying the convenience of the city is truly unique. It is the ideal spot for an authentic moment, whether for a relaxing break or an afternoon walk.
At the Feast of Agia Varvara: Every year, on December 4th, Drama celebrates with a unique custom that revives the legend of Agia Varvara. During the celebration, hundreds of small, lit boats are released to float on the waters of the lake. The sight is magical, with the lights reflecting on the water’s surface, creating an atmosphere of reverence and festivity. It is a special experience that combines religious tradition with the magic of the landscape.
